World's strongest man and British shot put record holder Capes dies

Geoff Capes, the British shot put record holder and two-time World's Strongest Man, has passed away at the age of 75. Capes set a remarkable shot put record of 21.68 meters in 1980, becoming the longest thrower in British history. His family announced his passing in a statement on October 23, expressing their sorrow.

Capes had an illustrious athletic career, securing two gold medals in shot put at the Commonwealth Games and excelling in the European Championships. He competed in three Olympic Games, narrowly missing a medal with a fifth-place finish in Moscow in 1980. Born in Lincolnshire, he was also a six-time World Highland Games champion.

Capes gained fame through his victories in the prestigious World's Strongest Man competitions, winning titles in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1983 and Cascais, Portugal, in 1985. Fellow strongman Eddie Hall, the 2017 World's Strongest Man, paid tribute to Capes, calling him a "true legend of strength." Hall remarked, "Geoff was not only a two-time World's Strongest Man and a shot put record-holder but also a giant of heart and spirit.
